John Derbyshire has a piece on Encounters: My Life with Nixon, Marcuse, and Other Friends and Teachers, the same Paul Gottfried book Steve Sailer wrote about recently–here’s an excerpt:

The future looks dark indeed; and as dark as it looks to a dilettante like me, it must look darker yet to someone who takes the life of the mind as seriously as Paul Gottfried does. How intensely intellectual the Old Right is! If you haven’t read your Aristotle in the original Greek, these guys can sometimes be hard to follow.

In today’s political circumstances they are of course perfectly irrelevant. Is there any case to be made for paleoconservatism as a long-term investment? There is, although the case rests on deeply pessimistic premises.

It may be that the Old Right will come into its inheritance at last twenty or thirty years from now, in one of the little fragment nations that will emerge when corruption, fiscal incompetence, demographic idiocy, educational romanticism, willful scientific ignorance, ethnic warfare, and missionary imperialism have finally destroyed the United States of America.

That will be too late for Paul Gottfried. As a patriot and a champion of America’s founding ideals, he would in any case be too distressed to say “I told you so.” The people of that future remnant, though, if they should come across a copy of Encounters in some dusty archive, might well shake their heads in sorrow, murmuring: “Why didn’t anyone listen to these guys?”

In “The Theory of Dyevolution” in the eXile, Richard Bickerstaff riffs on the Cochranian theory of accelerating evolution to suggest that the horrific shortage of men in Russia after WWII led to sexual selection for good looks in women.

Is Natural Selection really over? I thought so, But show me a really attractive woman from a photograph before 1910. Being unable to find first-rate hotness in history always perplexed me. The only solution I could conceive was one of those pitiful sophomore “social-constructionist” arguments, which never comfortably rested with my libido. But research recently published in the Proceedings of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences asserts human evolution has sped up since the invention of agriculture. The authors claim human genetic change has been happening at 100 times the rate of any other period over the last 5,000 years. Since eXile-readers share an interest in hot Soviet-bloc girls and war, I’d like to present a related theory that the two are inextricably linked.

The estimate for Soviet War dead in World War 2 is 24 million (plus five million, if you count Poland). The Soviet casualties are split pretty evenly between military and civilian. The military casualties were men–young men, most without children. Civilian casualties are likely stacked 2-1, men to women. The battle-plan on the Eastern Front was basically Gary Brecher’s genocidal “primitive warfare”; men were most worth butchering, whatever the situation, and the nearer to fighting (marrying) age, the better. While the Nazis wanted to exterminate whole Slavic populations for “living space,” women were killed less promiscuously. Stalinist purges, likewise, focusing mainly on party-members, also targeted men.

This left Eastern Europe, postwar, with a serious demographic shortage of men of marrying age. [More]

I like this article, and I like Bickerstaff’s style. Still, my impression is that the numbers generally don’t work out on these kind of single-generation selection event theories. This reminds me of the old theory that Steve Levitt’s Harvard economist buddy Roland Fryer is trying to revive that African-Americans have high blood pressure on average because of the high death rate on slave ships selected for salt retention.

Greg Cochran pointed out Fryer:

The reason it wouldn’t have an important effect is that you don’t get a lot of genetic change in one generation unless you try _really_ hard. If they lost the bottom 15% of the people (in terms of salt retention) during the Middle Passage, a cutoff of about one std below average, the increase in salt retention would be about a tenth or so of a standard deviation, assuming a narrow-sense heritability of 50%. You’d never notice the difference. [And, of course, genetic differences in salt retention didn't cause all the deaths in the Middle Passage, so this estimate is optimistic.]

Still, the Soviet sex-ratio skew after WWII is a fascinating event that must have had a lot of impact on society, but I’ve seldom read much about it.

By the way, in Old Master paintings, most girls are a little funny-looking. One partial exception is Botticelli. For example, at Venice Beach in LA around 1980, somebody painted a large-scale mural version of Botticelli’s Venus as a roller-skater girl.

The number of people pursuing naturalization is above recent averages, and designated experts say the reason is “anti-immigration” sentiment abroad in the land. In fact, applications are on track to reach one million this year.

“The anti-immigrant sentiment is bordering on the xenophobic, and people are taking notice of that,” said Evan Bacalao of the National Assn. of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund in Los Angeles. “So even though the fees have increased, people still want to make sure their voices are heard.”

To help boost the number of new citizens even more, an alliance of hundreds of organizations last week launched a “100 Days” national campaign to urge immigrants to apply for citizenship in time for the 2008 election.

In other words, they openly admit they don’t want citizenship because they love America, but because they hate our people and traditions and want to transform it via demographic warfare into Mexico North. They only care about the money and political power.

Meanwhile, a Hispanic non-profit is making the process easier by offering a big chunk of the $675 fee: New loans offered for citizenship applications [Orange County Register 11/1/07].

A nonprofit will offer up to $400 in no-interest loans to help immigrants apply to become U.S. citizens.

Will immigrants be required to pay back the loan, or will such capitalist notions be overlooked? Inquiring minds want to know.

A new Census report is out and the results are in: the tsunami of foreigners, led by illegal immigration, is overwhelming the historic American population. For example, several counties in Texas have less than 5 percent white population, south of the Mexican-Dixon line.

Whites are now in the minority in nearly one in 10 U.S. counties.

And that increased diversity, fueled by immigration and higher birth rates among blacks and Hispanics, is straining race relations and sparking a backlash against immigrants in many communities.

“There’s some culture shock,” said Mark Mather of the Population Reference Bureau, a Washington-based research agency. “But I think there is a momentum building, and it is going to continue.”

Of course, it’s not increased births among black citizens that is adding to “diversity” — the extreme transformation being wrought in the American nation is caused by the demographic warfare being waged via immigration against the current citizenry by Mexicans and others.

Immigration has spread from traditional gateways of southwestern border states and New York to all over the nation at a speed that has terrified many citizen communities with the rapidity by which a town may be swamped by illegal foreigners. For example, Luzerne County Pennsylvania (home to Hazleton) has experienced a tripling of Hispanics since 2000.

This being an Associated Press story, the boo hooey flows like a mighty river. Note how a US-born Hispanic complains that she feels unwelcome even as she works treasonously for an anti-borders, anti America organization. Perhaps there is a connection…

“I think across the board all of us feel like we’re not welcome,” said Jacinto, who was born in the U.S. and volunteers for an advocacy group called Mexicans Without Borders.

Prince William County has seen its Hispanic population more than double since 2000, to nearly 70,000 last year. Non-Hispanic whites account for a little more than half the population, down from about two-thirds in 2000. [...]

“I don’t think Latinos or any other so-called minority group are seeking to make white people a minority,” Jacinto said. “It’s just a reality.”

The article also recites the now-outdated statistic that “By 2050, minorities will account for half of U.S. residents.” Obviously the demographic reversal will be much sooner than mid-century unless our borders are shut down soon, and many of the residents will be loyal to foreign nations that are historic enemies of America, Mexico in particular.

Immigration — it’s the new way of war.

In today’s Islamic immigration-invasion of Europe, a building permit for a mosque may be as valuable as a bomber squadron in an earlier war.

Indirect aggression through demographic warfare is the current game plan to establish Eurabia building by building, block by block, by hostile Muslim immigrants who intend to turn Europe into dar al-Islam, under a worldwide Islamic government.

Keep in mind that a 2006 poll found 40 percent of Muslims residing in Britain want sharia law there, so the writing is on the wall for all to see.

A recent battle took place in a council meeting in Clitheroe.

CLITHEROE, England — On a chilly night this winter, this pristine town in some of Britain’s most untouched countryside voted to allow a former Christian church to become a mosque.

The narrow vote by the municipal authorities marked the end of a bitter struggle by the tiny Muslim population to establish a place of worship, one that will put a mosque in an imposing stone Methodist church that had been used as a factory since its congregation dwindled away 40 years ago.

The battle underscored Britain’s unease with its Muslim minority, and particularly the infiltration of terrorist cells among the faithful, whose devotion has challenged an increasingly secular Britain’s sense of itself.

However, apparently all is not completely lost in Britain. In the town of Dudley, the locals are fighting back. The council there voted down a proposal to build a mosque from scratch, because the scheme had “provoked widespread opposition.”

The Dudley resistance is encouraging to see, but where is the British version of the Minutemen?

Continuing high levels of Muslim immigration in Minneapolis-St. Paul have made the area a major arena for jihadist activity in American and have revealed the nature of the attack — an increasing assault of cultural intimidation to convince citizens that Americans’ traditional values of individual equality under the Constitution are not worth defending.

Muslim immigrants in Minnesota include a large number of Somalis who are among the most retro refugees ever. As uneducated tribal people, they are useful pawns in the jihadist program of building a future caliphate in America.

Jihadis skillfully manipulate liberal guilt and the belief in multiculturalism to erode resistance against hostile foreigners who insist that their “diverse” ways (e.g. polygamy) be accepted. As a result, Minnesota has become a major front line for jihadist attacks of a political nature, including the flying imams and the refusal of Muslim cabbies to drive passengers with seeing eye dogs or carrying alcohol. The flying imams recently escalated their bogus charges of discrimination by declaring they would sue the passengers on the flight who reported suspicious behavior of a terrorist nature.

Muslims’ aim in this well financed campaign is to wear down American resolve to fight demographic warfare. The Sons of Allah hope that comparing their pro-terrorist groups to civil rights will fool Americans. After all, Immigration is War by Other Means, a strategy that has thus far been very successful for Muslims in Europe.

Troubling incidents began several years ago, when taxi drivers at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport–about three-quarters of whom are Muslim–started refusing to transport passengers carrying alcohol. One woman, returning from France with wine, was turned away by five cabs in succession. Refusals of service now number about 100 a month, and heated altercations have erupted. [...]

In Washington, the Democratic leadership is likely to seek passage of the End Racial Profiling Act, of which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called herself, in 2004, a “proud” cosponsor. Both MAS and CAIR are stumping for the bill, which would bar airport security personnel from disproportionately questioning Muslims or people of Middle Eastern descent. Minnesota’s Keith Ellison, the nation’s first Muslim Congressman, told me that the imams’ situation reflects a misunderstanding of Muslim prayer and will be sorted out in court, while the other matters stem from the normal process of immigrant adjustment.

The events here suggest a larger strategy: By piggy-backing on our civil rights laws, Islamist activists aim to equate airport security with racial bigotry and to move slowly toward a two-tier legal system. Intimidation is a crucial tool. The “flying imams” lawsuit ups the ante by indicating that passengers who alerted airport authorities will be included as defendants. Activists are also perfecting their skills at manipulating the media. After a “pray-in” at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., one credulous MSNBC anchor likened the flying imams to civil rights icon Rosa Parks.

On this same subject, see scholar Bernard Lewis’ March 7 speech at the American Enterprise Institute in which he outlined the long history of Muslim aggression against Europe and the West.

In the eyes of a fanatical and resolute minority of Muslims, the third wave of attack on Europe has clearly begun. We should not delude ourselves as to what it is and what it means. This time it is taking different forms and two in particular: terror and migration.

The subject of terror has been frequently discussed and in great detail, and I do not need to say very much about that now. What I do want to talk about is the other aspect of more particular relevance to Europe, and that is the question of migration.

In earlier times, it was inconceivable that a Muslim would voluntarily move to a non-Muslim country.

The dire situation in Europe shows what happens when citizens ignore invasion by immigration. Activities by the enemies of America reveal that the cancer has taken root here. The first step must be to severely restrict Muslim immigration, which is now on the increase. We cannot let political correctness stand in the way of protecting the country.

All across the western world, Muslim immigrants have generated a tsunami of complaints about supposed ill treatment the have received here, when in fact the backlash against Islamic terrorism has been practically nonexistant. No one forced these immigrants to come and no one prevents them from returning to the world of Islam, which is geographically quite large.

Yet, the response in many societies has not been the obvious “Buzz Off” but instead a cowering deference (AKA dhimmitude), a fear that convinces our enemies that we are weak and ready to be conquered through immigration and terrorism. It’s a strategy that has worked very well so far — you have to wonder why Hitler bothered to build all those tank battalions and bombers. Demographic warfare is so much cheaper and less messy.

Britain has been one of the worst in terms of appalling weakness in the face of Islam. Theodore Dalrymple reflects on the substitution of normal cultural self-respect with PC debasement:

Here is an interesting little slice of contemporary English life.

The police go to a pub in a small town in Devon, looking for a suspect. They see a man there who they think resembles the suspect, and approach him. He becomes abusive and they arrest him and take him down to the station. He is drunk.

After a couple of hours in a jail cell, he says he feels sick and demands a doctor. The police call the police surgeon. When he arrives (he is an Indian), the arrested man says, “I want an English doctor, not a fucking Paki.”

The police then charge the man with racially aggravated insulting behavior. He elects for a superior court trial, and the prosecution proceeds with the case as though it were a very serious one.

Here in America, a pro-terrorist group, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), masquerades as a civil-rights organization, and the media and government go along with the falsehood. It recently received $50 million over 5 years for a media campaign to “dispel Islamophobia.” That works out to $10 million a year, over $192,000 per week and more than $27,000 per day to be spent on pro-Islam jabbering in the press.

We see the results constantly of all this propaganda money, most recently in CAIR’s whine-fest about the television action series 24, which has had the temerity to show Muslims as terrorists in America:

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said “24’s” season premiere, in which Islamic terrorists detonated a nuclear bomb near Los Angeles, risked stoking racial hatred.

One detail omitted by CAIR is that in 2004 Osama expressed his intention to kill 4 million Americans, with nuclear weapons being the means of choice. So one suitcase nuke would be only the beginning in the real terrorist master plan — which is not a fictional television show.

In another sign of demographic warfare (and the election season), a rather ordinary statement from Gov. Schwarzenegger encouraging assimilation has caused an explosion of vitriol from the Hispanics who run Sacramento.

Here are the remarks that got their sombreros in a bunch…

Recalling his own experience emigrating from his native Austria, the Republican governor said immigrants should learn English and U.S. history and “make an effort to become part of America.”

“That is very difficult for some people to do especially, I think, for Mexicans because they are so close to their country here so they try to stay Mexican but try to be in America, so there’s this kind of back and forth,” he said.

“What I’m saying to the Mexicans is you’ve got to go and immerse yourself and assimilate into the American culture, become part of the American fabric. That is how Americans will embrace you,” he added.

Art “Last Gasp” Torres couldn’t let that pass.

The Chairman of the California Democrat Party also weighed in. Art Torres said, “Governor Schwarzenegger has once again shown how out of touch he is with Californians. His comments were a calculated political insult to all immigrants.”

In fact, it is Torres who is out of touch. Despite the rapid influx of millions of Hispanics into the state, the majority of voters still support the rule of law regarding immigration: around two-thirds disapprove of driver’s licenses for illegal aliens, for example.

Citizens still believe in the melting pot, despite the abdication of the elites into globalism. A wake-up moment for many was the sight of a sea of Mexican flags in American streets last spring, as hundreds of thousands of lawless foreigners demanded US rights.

Incidentally, the Gov. is now paddling to the right after insulting pro-sovereignty voters in July by repudiating his support for Prop 187. Arnold can afford to refrain from kissing up to Mexicans, since the Democrat gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides is down by 17 points in recent polling.

So it goes in Mexifornia politics, 2006.

A recent demographic study prepared by the California Catholic Conference noted with satisfaction the growing population, both numerically and percentage-wise, of Catholics in the state due to immigration.

The paper begins with a warning that “leading Catholic indicators” like attendance and contributions reveal “a church at risk” (not to mention the continuing problems with pedophile priests as reinforced by a new documentary film, “Deliver Us from Evil.“). But the increasing demand for Catholic services, as typified by the California growth due to immigrants, shows that there is still a future for the decrepit church. That’s why it’s seen as a “Boom” by the hierarchy, not an overpopulation problem [A Catholic Boom for the United States, Catholic Online, 6/26/06].

As debate continues over immigration policy in the United States, a side effect of the large inflow of people is a sharp increase in the Catholic population. The size of that increase is evident in a study released last Monday by the California Catholic Conference.

By 2025, Catholics are expected to comprise around 36% of California’s population, up from the current 30%, according to the report, “Planning for the Future of the California Catholic Church: A Demographic Study.” The percentage of Catholics nationwide is expected to be 23.7% by 2025. The growth in California Catholics is fueled by the increasing Hispanic presence. [...]

Catholic Latinos will likely increase to 40 million in 2025, more than triple the 13 million in 1990. Total growth in the U.S. Catholic population will amount to 29 million by 2025. Virtually all of the growth (26 million) will be due to the Hispanic population. Proportionally, their share of the Catholic population will double, to 48%, over the 35-year period.

Of course, immigration’s so-called “side effect” of additional Catholics is precisely why the Council of Bishops has been campaigning furiously for amnesty — more immigrants mean a larger market share with increased political clout and corresponding access to taxpayer money. Furthermore, the Catholic Church is pushing hard for open borders in America because it believes it will gain power now being lost in Europe as Europeans become more secular.

The level of demographic detail in the 65-page report is considerable, and shows that the Catholic Church is quite cognizant of the benefits for itself resulting from the demographic warfare it is promoting.

In addition, the Council of Bishops is calling on parishioners to harbor illegal aliens in their homes. Say, Cardinal Mahony could certainly make room for a couple dozen in his presumably sumptuous digs.
