Jobs Crunch Comes To The Big Screen

The realities of the Jobs Crunch have become too large for Hollywood to ignore. The
latest protrayal of this topic comes from Jim Carrey’s “Fun with Dick and Jane”

“The film is an attack on American business culture. A roll-up credit at the end thanks a list of people who brought us the movie; all of them executives at Enron and WorldCom and other companies whose scandals have rocked the financial world.”[Sydney Morning Herald review,
December 22, 2005]

This is really nothing particularly new-Hollywood has always had lots of portrayals of business scandals.

What is different is the setting-and what it means to hit rock bottom:

“What follows is a kind of modern Depression comedy–a bit like Sullivan’s Travels, set in Silicon Valley.

Dick eventually sinks to day labour with Mexican illegals. Jane becomes a guinea pig for dangerous pharmaceutical testing.”

Traditionally, Silicon Valley managed to maintain a fairly “clean” and positive media image. I lived in Silicon Valley from 1984-1996. I dare say there is lots more grist for Hollywood’s mill that remains ready for exploitation.

“You Wouldn’t Be Complaining If They Were Swedish”

That’s what we keep hearing from our critics, who are implying some irrational hatred of Mexicans at VDARE.COM.

Well, I suppose Swedes are OK, especially if they’re sober, and not too left-wing. But the fact that Swedes are OK is what makes Sweden a fairly nice place to live, so they stay home.

I’d also like to point out that while Mexican illegals enter the US by trudging across the desert, and wading the Rio Grande, and thus are easy to stop.

Swedes who generally enter legally anyway, seem to be trained in hanggliding, jet-ski wave jumping and skydiving, and scubadiving.

At least, that’s what the girls at the new Swedish Bikini Team website say are their hobbies, which, along with a passion for martial arts and marksmanship makes keeping them out much more difficult. (Although I’m sure the Navy could have fun trying.)

So we might have a different attitude if all those illegals were Swedish, but fortunately the question doesn’t arise.

Mooslim Muumuu May Go Go

Across the pond, Dutch Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk is moving forward with possible legislation to disallow certain Islamic-style attire: “Netherlands considers burqa ban”.

I’ve long maintained that the burqa is not about Muslim modesty as much as it is a means to erase the individual humanity of women. Otherwise, the all-encompassing garments would not need to be identical. Nice to see that Geert Wilders agrees.

The proposal was put forward by independent politician Geert Wilders.

“That women should walk the streets in a totally unrecognisable manner is an insult to everyone who believes in equal rights,” he said.

Like his fellow MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Wilders lives with death threats from the Sons of Allah because he is fearless in advocating the values of western civilization, which include the equality of women.
