On the Julie Myers Appointment, the Silver Lining

Upon reading my friend D.A. King’s blog on the [1] stealth appointment by President Bush of Julie Myers as the new head of the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Immigration Enforcement, I want to offer what may be the silver lining.

Everything that D.A. wrote is 100% dead-on. But consider that by [2] appointing Myers—against, I am sure, the advice of most of his Republican colleagues and confidants—-Bush exposes himself yet again as pro-open borders and anti the wishes of the American people on immigration issues.

Anything stupid that Bush does on immigration—and that means everything that he does— is good for us.

The Myers appointment, which[3] cannot be defended by anyone under any set of circumstances, may therefore help the immigration reform movement in three ways:

  • It is now harder, if not impossible, for Bush to pass himself off as serious about immigration laws. By extension, this will make it tougher for Bush to get his way on his[4] pet project, the [5] amnesty/guest worker program.
  • Republicans seeking re-election in 2006 must be screaming. “Oh, no! One more nail in our coffin.” And their Democratic challengers now have another axe to grind about the Bush’s bizarre negligence toward immigration law enforcement. Thus, the boneheaded [6] Myers appointment could help reshape the immigration philosophies of the next Congress.
  • For those who support Bush in general, and I am thinking of media types like [7] Bill O’Reilly, [8] Sean Hannity, [9] Michael Savage and [10] Rush Limbaugh, their cheerleading grows dimmer every time Bush pulls [11] a stunt like Myers . When those powerful voices grow critical about Bush we’re helped.
  • I feel for the “hard-working and dedicated” ICE agents D.A. described. Their job is tough enough without a slap in the face from the Bush.

But the harsh reality is that we aren’t going to get immigration law enforcement from the Bush White House no matter who gets the head job.

If Bush is ignorant enough to think he can fool people into thinking he’s serious about immigration by naming Myers, let him try.

For Americans, Myers is more fuel on the fire.
