San Francisco in Hole, Continues Digging

San Francisco’s über-left political cadre is united in noisy opposition to any sort of immigration enforcement coming out of Washington, even though the city already offers sanctuary to illegal aliens. So you have to wonder whether an expanded position of that policy is really necessary.

Assemblyman Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, on Friday announced a new multifaith delegation of Bay Area religious leaders to protest the proposed legislation, which, he said, “not only unfairly discriminates against many people in our community, but it criminalizes churches, mosques and temples for the good work they are doing.”
[Line drawn on immigration legislation, San Francisco Chronicle, 4/8/06]

Leland Yee is still remembered with snickers and rolled eyes by some local horticulturists for his objections to a campaign for restoring native plants to San Francisco parks, saying that it represented “xenophobia.”

“Plants and trees without the proper pre-Mayflower lineage are called ‘invasive exotics’ and are wrenched from the soil to die,” Yee wrote in a local newspaper editorial. “How many of us are ‘invasive exotics’ who have taken root in the San Francisco soil, have thrived and flourished here, and now contribute to the diversity of the wonderful mix that constitutes present-day San Francisco?”
[Plan to save plants too toxic for some, San Jose Mercury News, 11/17/02]

Anyway, the Sensenbrenner legislation was a golden opportunity for snooty San Franciscans to mouth off about their self-appointed superiority over the non-Marxist majority. The capital of the Left Coast clearly loves to poke Red State Americans in the eye with its anti-American values and does so every chance it gets.

Supervisor Geraldo Sandoval recently drove liberal Fox commentator Alan Colmes to near apoplexy with his assertion that the United States should not have a military. That statement of loony pacifism followed a rejection by the Supes for the battleship Iowa to be retired to a city berth.

(On the humorous side, South Park ridiculed San Francisco as the home of insufferable hybrid-driving eco-snobs in an episode called “Smug Alert.” The show ripped the city as a place where local latte sippers announce that “we’re a little more progressive and ahead of the curve here in San Francisco.”)

San Francisco’s economy is based on tourism, so you would think the city wouldn’t continually insult the people who pay the bills. But no.

Bad King Vs. Good King in Georgiafornia

Atlanta Journal Constitution columnist Mike King has gone from knowing a lot about immigration to knowing nothing in just a few short months.

I wonder how that happened?

Last year, King wrote a couple of solid pieces about the impact of illegal immigration on Georgia.

But his latest (“Mexicans and Assimilation: The Challenge” Mike King, Atlanta Journal Constitution, March 6, 2006 ) is a pathetic, politically correct effort that may be a result of pressure from his open-borders boss, editorial page editor, Cynthia Tucker to toe the AJC line.

Tucker is as relentless as anyone in the MSM in her conviction that illegal immigration is a fine thing.

Referring to illegal aliens as part of a “new immigrant community,” King
[e-mail Mike King] suggests that failure to assimilate isn’t really the fault of Hispanics but is instead the logical outcome of “changes in the law, mass communication, the world economy.”

I’ll bet that idea never occurred to you…and for good reason. It is abject nonsense.

And King adds that the sooner that “zealot nativists” (a not-too-subtle reference to our Georgia-based colleague D.A. King) realize that forces beyond the control of Hispanics prevent their assimilation, the better off we will all be.

King may have helped save his job with his change of heart. But he sold his soul in the process.

Frist Message Board Captured By Cave-In Critics

Apparently the White House line is to try to blame Democrats for the stalling of “Comprehensive” a.k.a. Cave-In Immigration Reform, but the real reason is buried in this LA Times story this morning: about half the GOP Senators didn’t support the Frist compromise a.k.a. cave-in. In other words, the President has lost control of his party.

Just how serious the GOP grass-roots revolt is can be guaged from the fact that Majority Leader Frist’s VOLPAC message board has been taken over by critics of his cave-in. Presumably this will be erased when his techie wakes up, so here are a few of the (obviously unedited) comments:

“Please spare us the old “democrates spoiled everything” spiel. Not a single person in my large circle of friends and family (a family of stauch republicans) supported the bill you brokered. We, like 80% or more of this Nations citizens, oppose ANY bill that includes a path to citizenship cough*amnesty*cough. “

“I don’t understand what is the hurry to give citizenship to illegal alliens lets take step by step, I went thru the whole enchilada, proud to be a US citizen, my US flag has been in my backyward since 9/11 and ready to defend my country, in which mind fits that all those demostrators wants to be US citizen?”

“I speak with others voices. We are appalled and disgusted with what we are seeing in the “reform” of illegal aliens.’

“I am so sick of hearing the Republicans talk about how the Democrats are obstructing their plans. The true is the Republicans just lie down or cave in and let the Democrats walk all over them. That includes you, Dr. Frist.”

“Senator Frist, I have supported the Republicans since I could 1st vote in 1966. I was thrilled when Republicans FINALLY took control of the House & Senate and then watched as the Senate allowed the press to destroy Gingrich. And now after 12 years, I ask “WHAT have the republicans accomplished besides spending MORE THAN EVER (not counting the war effort) and now proposing to allow lawbreakers to gain full benefits of this country. I’m not sure I’m correct, but, I’ve heard one of the provisisions is to allow illegals to attend colleges at the INSTATE tuition rate. My kids were not allowed that luxuries and I’m STILL paying their tuition debts after the LAST of three has graduated (about 6-7 years of payments). And now you want me to continue to support the Republicans. I’m not sure I can support you any longer. I DO NOT inted to vote for Sen Burns (Montana). I am not sure if I will even vote for the 1st time since 1966. HEED THE WARNINGS. Conservatives are NOT HAPPY with YOU and your party!!!!!”

“I have been dealing with this invasion by non Americans into our country for 36yrs.as a cop! It has been a problem for that long.
Why are BOTH partys JUST NOW dealing with it!
Quit whining like it’s a NEW problem and FIX it!
I stoped 15 in a van and the office of ICE in Nashville told me to turn them loose if I had no charges.
Well this is one life long Republican who is feed up!!!!!!! Fix it or “We the People” WILL use the CONSTITUTION to fix the GOV. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
