Mahony Baloney

Cable TV pundit Tucker Carlson did a nice smackdown Thursday of uber-charlatan Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles, who has amassed a portfolio of less than admirable moral choices.

Not only has Mahony been one ot the biggest advocates for ignoring American immigration law, but his actions regarding the pedophile priests under his control are disturbing indeed. It has been known for several years that Mahony knowingly reassigned pedophile priests to other parishes, and a Stockton jury stated in a 1998 verdict that he “acted with malice and that his conduct was despicable.” This week saw the release of similarly unflattering information which Mahony had sought to keep secret.

Carlson noted Cardinal Mahony’s newly found expertise about terrorism and national security as they relate to immigration ["The Situation" with Tucker Carlson, April 20 transcript]:

“The war on terror isn’t going to be won through immigration restrictions,” Mahony thundered from the pulpit. He went on to scoff at the idea that al Qaeda terrorists would bother to walk through the hot desert from Mexico just to attack the United States.

The cardinal’s opinions about national security were taken seriously by the press, by and large. Still, you had to wonder, is Roger Mahony really a man capable of recognizing a threat when he sees one? Apparently not.

According to today’s Los Angeles Times, Mahony let at least 12 priests continue to work around children, in some cases for many years, after they’d been accused of molesting kids.

Mahony was warned twice about the behavior of one of his priests. The cardinal did nothing about it. That priest ultimately pleaded guilty to four counts of lewd conduct with a child under 14.

And yet despite all this, Mahony still has the gall to lecture the rest of us about our moral inferiority because we don’t support illegal immigration. At this point, Roger Mahony is not in a position to tell anybody anything. He’s lucky he’s not in jail.

Calling Mahony an arrogant hypocrite, more concerned with church politics than Biblical teachings, somehow seems inadequate.

Railroad Killer Still With Us, Victims Still Dead

Angel Maturino Resendiz, the illegal immigrant famous as The Railroad Killer has still not been executed.[Execution Delayed for 'Railroad Killer' AP, April 20, 2006] They’re trying to decide how crazy he is, and he’s being examined by psychiatrists. I’m not a big fan of the insanity defense, since crazy people may actually react better to a very simple idea like “If you murder somebody, we will kill you.” They may also be smart enough to realize that they’re crazy, and think “Hey, I can kill comeone and get away with it.”

But of course, the point about Resendiz is that he

repeatedly entered the U.S. illegally over a 25 year period, had at least 25 encounters with U.S. law enforcement, was deported three times and “voluntarily returned” at least four times, and who, between 1997 and 1999, is known to have who murdered at least 12 Americans–the last four after being released by the INS, although there were already warrants outstanding for his arrest.

Peter Brimelow spoke at Vanderbilt on the question: Do “Good Fences Make Good Neighbors.” (Spoiler alert: yes, they do.)

The Vanderbilt administration has posted it as an MP3 File. [Conservative journalist Peter Brimelow calls immigration a luxury, not a necessity at IMPACT Symposium (MP3 link)]
