Deportation At Reason-able Prices

Nick Gillespie of Reason Magazine has just “stumbled accross “the Center for American Progress report which claims that deporting illegals would be more trouble than it’s worth.

But here’s a hint, when they call it Deporting the Undocumented: A Cost Assessment[PDF] , instead of saying, as Gillespie does“So How Much Would It Cost to Deport All Those Illegal Immigrants Anyway?,” [ Hit and Run, July 10, 2006] then that one word, “undocumented,” tells you all you need to know about their attitude to the idea of enforcing the the immigration law. Ed Rubenstein has some contrary facts and figures here:National Data: No-one’s Suggesting Mass Deportation—But It Would Pay For Itself.

Note: Gillespie also links to an Onion infographic with a picture of a very well-built fence.

NY Times Immigration Piece And Immigrant Protests

If you read Steve Sailer’s Sunday article, George Borjas vs. David Card’s Unworldly Philosophy, you might want to check out the NY Times article he was responding to, now on line for free.[The Immigration Equation By ROGER LOWENSTEIN July 9, 2006]

For example, on page 2 there’s this:

This spring, while militias on the prowl for illegal immigrants were converging on the Arizona border and, on the other side of the political fence, immigrant protesters were taking to the streets…

The (illegal) immigrant protesters who were taking to the streets in support of (illegal) immigration aren’t on opposite sides of the American political fence from the Minutemen–they’re citizens of a foreign country.

This is a concept that’s better understood in Mexico than the United States.
