Michigan - not Karl Rove - shows how to win.

The Human Rights crime which is constituted by Affirmative Action in America has been an interest of VDARE.com’s right from the start. Indeed, our founder, Peter Brimelow, was writing hostile articles whenever he could for years previously – for instance here and here.

So it was that, and with RNC member Curly Haugland’s luminous assessment that the Republicans are pandering too much to minorities which I blogged on earlier in mind, that I read Now the GOP Is For Affirmative Action? Harry Stein City Journal Autumn 2006

Imperative reading for anyone concerned for anyone concerned with the direction of the American polity, this article is a lucid documentation of the Bush Administration’s reversal of the slow and painful efforts begun under Reagan to contain and repair the damage this iniquitous policy has wrought on the core Republican constituency – white men and their families.

A grim tale with a couple moments of wry amusement:

Ward Connerly, the Black leader of the State Ballot Initiatives against Affirmative Action - including this year’s in Michigan - reports that an initially favorable reception by Texas Governor George W. Bush came to nothing:

“I was told that Karl Rove doesn’t think that’s a good idea right now, we’ll get back to you later. To this day, it’s never happened.”

(Amnesty, accelerated immigration, Affirmative Action: why does this guy hate his own people so much?)

• Senator Barack Obama is referred to as GOP chairman Ken Mehlman’s “Harvard Law School pal”. So that’s why Mehlman baled out – no doubt he plans to run Obama’s Presidential campaign!

But otherwise it is a sordid tale of betrayal, at best stupid and cowardly, but probably in my view rooted in something worse.

However, the fact is that Connerly and the new American heroine, Jennifer Gratz, did actually win in Michigan. The campaign is extensively discussed in the article, which however went to press with their victory uncertain.

That they could win, in a Democratic year and a fairly liberal state, shows that Haugland is right. The issues are there. Properly presented, they can produce victory.

The problem is, that would entail policies which the gang controlling George W. absolutely does not want.

VDARE.com wishes it could have given more coverage to the Michigan effort, which might turn out to be the most important vote of the year. It is a matter of scarce resources

Hat Tip, View from the Right, which has its own, characteristically acidic, analysis.

Pelosi Who-Must-Be-Obeyed

It’s certainly true that a good number of the new House Democrats are not typical open-borders liberals since many campaigned as tough on enforcement. However, an array of interest groups see the new Congress as the big chance for the illegal alien gravy train of their dreams. The President, for one, can still do a lot despite his lame duck status, and apparently regards an illegal alien amnesty to be the “legacy” of his unique presidency.

Over at Aztlan HQ, the Raza folks are busy plotting important tactics like whether they should call the proposed border fence the “Berlin Wall” or the “Tortilla Wall”. Such are the vital decisions required when using the media to pimp an unpopular message.

What may be crucial is that the Democrats spent a lot of money to help their candidates win, and Speaker Pelosi (who benefits directly from slavery lite) will make those elected feel they have dues to pay.

At the same time, if gratitude counts, Pelosi will get their support if she needs it. The Democratic campaign committee has spent more than $170,000 to help Shuler’s race against Rep. Charles Taylor; $250,000 for Weaver; $1 million aiding Donnelly’s race against Rep. Chris Chocola; and about $2 million to ease Ellsworth’s way past Rep. John Hostettler.
[GOP Hopes for a Slim Majority, AP 11/5/06]

Brad Ellsworth is the Indiana sheriff who campaigned as being strong on enforcement in order to beat Immigration Subcommittee Chair John Hostettler. After spending so much money on Ellsworth’s election, Pelosi will indeed expect reciprocation from him in terms of voting her way.

So when the House presents its illegal alien amnesty bill, Rep. Ellsworth (among others) will certainly feel a tap on his shoulder as chits are called in. Two million dollars is a lot of obligation.

The Martinez appointment: Wisdom from the High Plains

VDARE.com has in the past been very negative about the characteristics usually seen in members of the Republican National Committee. (We made an exception early this year for the valiant Randy Pullen, who forced his colleagues to consider a challenge to the Bush Amnesty proposal.) Another exception clearly should be made for North Dakota National Committeeman Curly Haugland. On Wednesday the Los Angeles Times (Conservatives wary of choice to lead the RNC By Peter Wallstein and Nicole Gaouette November 15 2006) reported:

Criticism of Martinez came Tuesday from several conservatives, including Curly Haugland, an RNC member from North Dakota, who said he believed the party was far too focused on pandering to minorities.

“We’re losing our base in droves because they don’t get campaigned to,” he said, referring to GOP-leaning conservatives.

This unimpeachable assessment is exactly what is implied by the recent Nebraska poll. Appointing Martinez is an arrogant insult to the core Republican voters, and they will notice.

Significantly, Haugland’s candor seems only to have attracted the attention of a small gaggle of leftwing blogs. The idea of activating the GOP “base” fills them with rage. The shoal of Bush Administration pilot fish blogs purporting to be conservative is silent. Activating the GOP base fills them with fear.

Applaud Curly Haugland.

With eight others, it was his signature which enabled the Pullen battle to be fought. Their names and some e mail addresses can be found at the end of this blog. (HINT, HINT.) The Martinez RNC chairmanship atrocity has to be confirmed by vote by the whole committee in January.

The members need some input.
