Funny how there has been little or no television coverage of this story. Mass-murdering moms generally get a lot of attention from mainstream media, which increasingly dwells on shocking crimes for their easy explanation and emotional punch. Perhaps MSM types are made uncomfortable by the citizenship status and ethnicity of this alleged killer, Angelica Alvarez, who used gas to asphyxiate her four kids by two fathers in Elkhart, Indiana. Elkhart Circuit Judge Terry Shewmaker ordered her jailed without bond. He also ordered that she be examined to make sure she is competent to stand trial. Hill said earlier he had no reason to believe she wasn’t.

Lopez had told the South Bend Tribune that he met Alvarez in Mexico and that they lived in Lazaro Cardenas, a city in the state of Michoacan. A decade ago, Lopez and Alvarez moved to Goshen, a town near Elkhart where Lopez had family.

Shewmaker asked Alvarez through a translator Wednesday at the courthouse in Goshen whether she was in the country legally. She said no.

People who know the family say that Alvarez was depressed from losing her job. It cannot be easy to live in a strange country where you don’t speak the language and live alienated from the mainstream community. Multicultural cheerleaders like to downplay how psychologically difficult immigration can be, even under the best of circumstances. In this instance, the addition of a life-stressing job loss to living outside the law may have been the last straw for Angelica Alvarez.

Terrible crimes like this one should be a reminder that we do uneducated illegal aliens no favors by allowing them to remain in a society that requires more skills than they have.

Immigrant crimes of rage and frustration, e.g. the SUV jihad in San Francisco and the Somali mass murder in Kentucky, surely have some causal basis in the interior culture clash that adult immigrants experience.

However, psychologically complex stories of foreigners going postal don’t fit into the press’ favorite parable of plucky immigrants achieving the American Dream, so disturbing crimes like that of Angelica Alvarez are largely ignored.

In Marijnissen’s view the immigration problem was not caused by the welfare state but by the capitalist system which invited foreign “guest workers” over to Europe in order to keep the wages of indigenous workers low. Unlike the other leftist parties in Europe the SP was not very fond of immigrants. It cared more for the native lower classes, who felt threatened by the newcomers. In the 1990s the SP’s election slogan was “Against” and one of the things it was against was immigration – this weapon used by the capitalists to exploit the workers.

Now, I see this in part as vindication of my claims that the major barrier to immigration reform in the US and UK is the lack of proportional representation and that US immigration policy is a ruthless act of class warfare directed by the rich towards the not so rich. Frankly the gains of Democrats in the US appear rather limited compared to the gains the immigration and globalization skeptics made in the Netherlands.

Former Liberal Geert Wilders has established himself as the successor of Pim Fortuyn and also picked up votes.

An anti-racial preferences stunt gets national attention–and entirely predictable outrage. The College Republicans are offering a $250 scholarship … for whites.

The obvious double standard is that there are huge amounts of money available to minority students based on their ethnicity.

One amusing note is that, like scholarships that require the grantee to be 25% Hispanic, they are only asking the students to be 25% white–this includes most North American blacks, a large proportion of Indians, and almost all Hispanics.

College Republicans Say Scholarship Was Created to Spark Debate

BOSTON, Nov. 22, 2006 — - Joe Mroszczyk, president of the College Republicans at Boston University, admits he set out to stir up a hornet’s nest when he came up with the idea of offering a whites-only scholarship at the school. But he got a little more buzz than he bargained for.

“To tell you the truth, we didn’t see this coming,” Mroszczyk said. “The Drudge Report picked it up yesterday, and today I just finished a round of national interviews. It’s kind of overwhelming.”

All the media attention is focused on a $250 Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship offered by Mroszczyk and the BU chapter of the College Republicans. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher; they must write two essays; and, here’s the kicker, they must be at least one-quarter Caucasian.

The application itself offers an explanation: “We believe that racial preferences in all their forms are perhaps the worst form of bigotry confronting America today.”

According to Mroszczyk, his group is offering the scholarship to point out “how ridiculous it is to have any sort of racially based scholarship.”

At BU, for example, students who are at least one-quarter Hispanic can apply for a National Hispanic Recognition Scholarship.

“There are plenty of poor, white, academically gifted students who need that money just as much,” Mroszczyk said.
