Prostitution and Illegal Immigration

Meredith May and Deanne Fitzmaurice wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle wrote about an exploited young Korean prostitute. The part of this article I think that may be of special interest to VDARE.COM readers explains some of the connection between the sex trade in the US and illegal immigration:

“Why do we have to cross illegally if we have passports?” she asked, referring to the passport that traffickers in Seoul had created for her.

The woman explained that Koreans need visas to get into the United States, but not into Mexico or Canada. Because it’s difficult to obtain legitimate U.S. visas in Korea, it’s easier to fly just outside the California border and sneak in.

“You’ve come this far,” the woman said. “Why don’t you just cross?”

Now, I personally feel that banning prostitution doesn’t really protect the women involved in this trade. I would rather see laws regulating working conditions and safety that would weigh on those that profit from this practice–and the simple fact is that there is a lot of valuable real estate that is being used for clearly illegal purposes and can and should be seized to fund a fair solution to this issue. The current structure that pushes young women into the sex trade in countries where they don’t understand the legal system and have few legal protections is dangerous for both countries involved. There ought to be some program to faciliate rapid repatriation of anyone brought to the US for an illegal purpose-and to make sure that this process doesn’t weigh on them any more heavily than necessary. I would expect that if a woman brought to the US illegally went to a shelter at present, the most the shelter would do is help them get a green card-when what they really need is to be interviewed by someone that can give them legal assistance-and being gotten back home in a matter of days–and provided some funds so they can resettle in their home country decently(paid for of course by the profiteers in this situation). I don’t want to make the lives of the women exploited by this trade any harder-but I see no reason to tolerate wealthy folks becoming wealthier this way. It would also be rather simple to require that if Canada and Mexico want continuation of NAFTA or anything like it that they stiffen their visa requirement and demonstrably cease to be a conduit for illegal immigration to the US.

Calderon Inaugurated as President of Mexico

On December 1st, 2006, Felipe Calderon was inaugurated as president of Mexico, for a six-year term.

Mexico’s president has many challenges to face, and I wish him the best. The principal priorities of his administration, he has announced, are “security, jobs and fighting poverty.” Yes, it’s a big challenge, and it would be good for all of us if he succeeds. He needs to hit the ground running, that’s for sure. I hope he does succeed .

I was also quite pleased with what Calderon had to say about Mexican emigration in a speech delivered after his inauguration:

“Migration continues to divide our families. Rather than having workers leave, I desire to seek investment from the United States. It is better that investment come here where our workers are, that our families and communites no longer be divided.”
“To create the jobs that we need, it is indispensible to remove obstacles that impede both businesses and the economy from growing faster. Important changes in economic policy are needed…”

Amen, Presidente Calderon! Wonderful words, and I hope you can follow up on them!

Marine Survives Iraq but Is Killed by a Drunk Illegal Alien at Home

Marine Cpl. Brian Mathews
Marine Cpl. Brian Mathews lived through a tour of duty in Iraq, but was struck down in his own country by a drunk-driving illegal alien. He was killed Thanksgiving night near his parents’ home by a previously arrested illegal whose blood alcohol was 4 times the legal limitdrunk to a degree that would render many people unconscious. Mathews was in a car stopped at an intersection with his date Jennifer Bower when Eduardo Raul Morales-Soriano’s car smashed into them.

Morales-Soriano, a Mexican national, refused a breathalizer test on Feb 5 after an accident which should have suspended his North Carolina drivers license, but a police error allowed him to keep it. In July, he used the NC license to obtain a Maryland DL. Maryland does not require proof of legal residency to get a drivers license.

Morales-Soriano has also been charged with two counts of homicide by motor vehicle in the deaths of Marine Cpl. Brian Mathews, 21, of Columbia, and his date for the evening, Jennifer Bower, 24, of Montgomery Village. Mathews had recently finished eight months of duty in Iraq last year and planned to leave the military in June.

Morales-Soriano, who, Howard County Police said, had a blood-alcohol level four times the legal limit, was not injured in the crash. He is being held in the Howard County Detention Center in lieu of $830,000 bail.
[Man Charged in Marine's Death, NBC4 11/30/06]

Bill O’Reilly covered this case on Thursday, explaining how unacceptably low standards for drivers licenses and general permissiveness regarding illegal immigration contributed to yet another death by an illegal alien:

“The bottom line is that you have an Iraqi veteran and his girlfriend dead because North Carolina will not check a driver’s license application and Maryland will not act aggressively when stopping people they suspect of being in the country illegally. That is the state of the union in the United States in 2006.”

It’s a shame that the House immigration bill was not signed into law because it included Rep. Sue Myrick’s tough drunk driving provision: “Myrick: You’re drunk, you’re driving, you’re illegal, you’re deported, period.”

Colorado Paper Tired Of Diversity Tests

After reading an article in The Chronicle For Higher Education about the recently published “test” for diversity, administered by the Education Trust, on which no school in the entire US earned an “A“, I came across a great op-ed defending the University of Colorado’s failing grade. The Colorado Springs Gazette writes:

We’re frankly tired of the antiquated idea that diversity in its truest sense can be achieved by adhering to some demographically pure racial formulas, whether in hiring preferences, college admissions policies or anything else…Half the colleges graded received D’s or worse, suggesting the exercise is designed to advance some agenda, rather than provide an accurate measure of real diversity on campus, at least as we define it.

The article does go on to make some fairly confused (but forgivable, in my view) pc noises, but makes some surprisingly enlightened observations along the way:

We’re not saying race doesn’t matter, or that racial injustice doesn’t exist, in America today, just that it matters far less to average Americans than it does to activists, politicians and advocacy groups, who almost seem to have a vested interest in perpetuating racial divisions and fueling grievances.‘Diversity’ becoming outdated concept, Colorado Springs Gazette 11/29/06.

Democrats Are All About Immigration Reform–Or Something Like That

If you’ve been watching game, Democrats it seems want to be the party of immigration reform. Oh yes, they are all about it these days.

And it doesn’t stop there…Senator Biden has even dared to (gasp!) speak ill of Mexico. No, I am not yanking your chain.

Check this out: Biden blames Mexico for our illegal immigration problem, our drug problems and calls their government “corrupt”…and he does it quite frequently.

I know this and you know this but for the last six years Bush II has flat refused to blame Mexico for anything.

George W. Bush could suffer the worst Montezuma’s Revenge in the history of modern medicine after eating a green taco in Tijuana and still find a way to blame Al Qaeda or Al Gore.

In a recent AP interview (here) Biden said:

“It is one of the wealthiest countries in the hemisphere and because of a corrupt system that exists in Mexico, there is the 1 percent of the population at the top, a very small middle class and the rest is abject poverty.”

In the same article, he goes on to blame Mexico for the illegal immigration problem in America.

And there’s more…where tough immigration reform is concerned (and I mean “tough” by liberal standards which means no amnesty although they have yet to define ‘amnesty’) Biden is not alone in the Senate.

Senate newcomer Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri) ran an ad back in September, in which she sat in her kitchen, looked into a camera and said:

“Let me tell you what I believe in,” she said. “No amnesty for illegal immigrants.”

And P.S. She won! [Still no slam dunk on an immigration bill Tensions are surfacing as Democratic leaders must deal with newly elected conservatives inside their own party. By Nicole Gaouette, Times Staff Writer November 23, 2006 ]

About six months ago, Democrats were all about the “path to citizenship” provisions and other amnesty euphemisms.

Today we’re hearing a new tune from the Left: Mexico is a problem and amnesty is not a good idea.

Pelosi did not list immigration reform as a priority issue for the first 100 hours of the new Congress—a very clear sign that she plans to avoid it like the plague.

Oh yes, little Ms. Green Card’s All Around knows that best way to ensure a Republican victory in 2008 is to promote amnesty legislation.

You see, the Democrats only won because Republican voters let them win. Those of us fed up with the GOP’s refusal to pass true immigration reform (among other things) either stayed home or gave our votes to anybody on the ballot without the word “incumbent” next to it.

Indeed…I had lunch last week with various politically minded friends. Some were from California and a few were from Nevada.

Needless to say my friends from Nevada were proud of the new laws in Pahrump, NV which declare English the official language etc…

All present save for one were Republicans or very conservative Independents—and yet, it seemed none of them voted for a single incumbent candidate in their respective districts.

My friend Mark went so far as to say “I looked at the ballot, if I saw the word ‘incumbent’ I knew not to vote for them.”

I think there were two voter anomalies at work on November 7th which led to the Democrat sweep:

1. Those disgusted with Republicans
2. Those disgusted with Incumbents

The combination spelled disaster for the GOP…and it could as well for the Dems.

The Pelosi crew does not want to do anything to anger those disenfranchised Republicans enough to go back to the GOP.

Let them stay hone or even better, support the Democrats.

Pelosi knows that the fastest way to tick off those undecided voters at this point would be the creation of 12 million illegal aliens turned new U.S. citizens.

So what’s the solution?

A big name like Joe Biden is going to point the finger at Mexico…and rightly so…that way the Democrats appear to be taking a no-nonsense approach to immigration reform.

In other words, exactly what the GOP should have done!!!
