Obama’s Misplaced Eloquence On The Shootings

Michelle Malkin heard Obama speak on the Virginia Tech shootings, [MP3] and was not impressed. She said

The next time an MSM outlet describes Barack Obama as “articulate,” I suggest you send them this audio link. My friend Jessica McBride sent it along, and man, is it painful. It’s from his speech yesterday in Milwaukee–tying the Virginia Tech massacre to Iraq, Darfur, Don Imus, and everything but the kitchen sink.

See Udolpho on comparing the shootings to Imus’s gaffe and Reason’s Hit And Run blog on comparing the shootings to outsourcing.

More On Immigrant Massacres

A list of campus shootings from the Associated Press includes one I hadn’t heard of:

A list of deadly U.S. campus shootings - International Herald Tribune
Nov. 1, 1991: Gang Lu, 28, a graduate student in physics from China, reportedly upset because he was passed over for an academic honor, opens fire in two buildings on the University of Iowa campus. Five university employees are killed, including four members of the physics department; one other person is wounded. The student fatally shoots himself.

Worth reading on this story:

Surviving the Graduate Curriculum

ADALAIDE MORRIS

While no one publicly endorsed Gang Lu’s remedies, his complaints set cracked bells clanging all across campus. Police in plainclothes hung out in department offices where threats had been made; a student who told a slow clerk that she too should have been shot was severely reprimanded; another student was deported. Then, one supper time in early December, I got a call warning me that an English department graduate student—a student whose comprehensive examination lists I had questioned three weeks before—was saying that I should be “stopped,” I should “learn a lesson from Gang Lu,” I should know that Gang Lu’s victims owed him a debt and had, by now, forgiven him. In mid-November this student had been committed to an inpatient psychiatric unit, but in December, having convinced a judge that her threats were “only poetry,” she was released. With the murder of five of my colleagues fresh in my mind, I was—I confess—terrified. “But why,” I asked a graduate student who was recounting one of my would-be assassin’s more sustained tirades, “why didn’t you interrupt her?” “Because you,” the student replied, hesitantly, as if hearing her words, too, from the outside, “have more power than she does?”

Reading the essay, I think Professor Morris still believes in the “hierarchies of race, gender, and class “ that modern educators spend so much time on, but you can see this gave her a pause.

Unfounded Fears of Backlash Fly around the World

It took only a few hours for the butcher of Virginia Tech to be identified as Korean immigrant Cho Seung-Hui for the squawks against a non-existent backlash to begin. The bodies of the victims are not even in the ground and the bleating is at full volume.

Yoo, a petite graduate student with long black hair, said she didn’t know the gunman and none of her Korean friends had heard of him either.

“If he speaks Korean, we’d maybe know him, but none of us does,” she said. She said her family in Seoul had called overnight, very concerned Yoo might be a target if there was a backlash against Asian students at Virginia Tech.
[Asians fear backlash after Virginia Tech shooting, Reuters 4/17/07]

In Seoul, government officials were alarmed at what vengeful Americans might do.

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday the government hoped the Virginia Tech shootings, allegedly carried out by a 23-year-old South Korean native, would not “stir up racial prejudice or confrontation.”
[Korea fears prejudice with shooting link, Associated Press 4/17/07]

As usual, there have been no reports of any behavior that could possibly be considered “backlash” against Koreans or Asians resulting from the mass murder.

Even so, after such a horrific immigrant crime, the ethnic group of the perp commonly issues pre-emptive statements condemning a backlash against them; these days such complaints are practically automatic. And this case is no exception.

Fear-of-backlash statements and reporting are a form of cultural intimidation, that if you even mention that the killer was an immigrant then you must be some sort of racist.

As a result, the important discussions about the inherent psychological strains of transcultural immigration never occur. The media chatter constantly about how wonderful diversity is and ignore the stress of adjusting to a different society. Immigrants are expected to be happy and grateful, while many are not. Stress is cumulative, and when the difficulties of cultural adjustment are piled on top of the normal problems of young adulthood, some may explode. Just two months ago, a Bosnian teenager living in Salt Lake City killed five in a rampage in a shopping mall.

We do no one any favor by encouraging millions from vastly different cultures to move here. Excessive diversity often creates unhappiness and worse for everyone concerned. How many more innocent Americans have to die before multicultural immigration is recognized as being a monumental failure?

Kindness to the many victims of both legal and illegal immigrants requires that the bogus tactic of crying “Backlash” be ignored for a more realistic consideration of the failed ideology of multiculturalism and all that goes with it.

Asian-American Journalists Promote Media Coverup

This is pretty disgusting. To actually prevent people from knowing the shooter’s race, you’d have to conceal his name–there are no non-Koreans named Cho Seung-Hui. This story is one of just eight (8) stories on Google News just now that that use the word “immigrant” in conjunction with Korean AND gunman.

Asian-American Journos Urge Media Not to Mention Race of Virginia Killer

By E&P Staff

Published: April 17, 2007 2:50 PM ET

NEW YORK The Asian American Journalists Association [Send them mail]has issued a statement calling on the media to avoid references to the race of Cho Seung-Hui, the student who killed 33 people at the Virginia Tech campus yesterday.

“There is no evidence at this early point that the race or ethnicity of the suspected gunman has anything to do with the incident, and to include such mention serves only to unfairly portray an entire people,” the journalists’ group said in a statement. “The effect of mentioning race can be powerfully harmful. It can subject people to unfair treatment based simply on skin color and heritage.”

Additionally, the group’s statement [Written by Janice Lee (send her mail)]said that it wished to remind the media that “the standards of news reporting should be universal and applied equally no matter the platform or medium, including blogs.”

Cho was a 23-year-old South Korean immigrant who had been in the U.S. for 15 years. Early reports of the horrific massacre on Monday mentioned sources who incorrectly said the shooter was a Chinese national who had come in on a visa last year.

Immigrant Shootings

Just exactly how many murders will it take to convince the Open Borders lobby, whose leader now seems to be President Bush, that mass Third World immigration is not such a good idea?Sam Francis, VDARE.com: 11/29/04 - Why Immigrants Kill

The answer seems to be a heck of a lot. Here are some, in no particular order.

Jamaican gunman Colin Ferguson, the Long Island Railroad killer

[W]e might, equally reasonably, expect to see balancing anecdotal coverage like this:

…In February 1993, a gang of Middle Easterners, (mostly illegally overstaying after entering on non-immigrant visas—one banned as a terrorist but admitted on a tourist visa in error) blow up New York’s World Trade center, killing six and injuring more than 1,000!! In December 1993, a Jamaican immigrant (admitted as a student, but stayed, illegal status automatically regularized after marriage to a U.S. citizen) opens fire on commuters on New York’s Long Island Rail Road, killing six and wounding 19!!! WHAT’S GOING ON??!!?”

That was in 1995, before the Internet. So was the case of Mir Aimal Kansi, who shot up the CIA headquarters, killing two, in 1993, and was executed in 2002.[Execution in Virginia]

Empire State Building shooter Hassan Abu Kamal.

New York, the site of the 9/11 attacks, has the worst “victim disarmament” laws in the country. You could start firing a pistol into any large group of New Yorkers and be fairly sure none of them could fire back.

In an earlier attack in 1997, a Palestinian named Ali Hassan Abu Kamal did just that. He opened fire on the top deck of the Empire State Building. Giuliani called for Floridians to disarm themselves, getting it exactly backward.[Reconquista, Terrorism, and Gun Control By James Fulford, October 17, 2001]

February 18, 2007 update on the 1997 shooting:

Finally, the European press has decided who’s at fault: Charlton Heston.

European Press Reactions: Blaming Charlton Heston - International - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News
In the strongest editorialized image of the day, German cable news broadcaster NTV flashed an image of the former head of the National Rifle Association, the US gun lobby: In other words, blame rifle-wielding Charlton Heston for the 33 dead.

However, they don’t seem to have any eyewitnesses who can place him on the scene. Mr. Heston, 82, is a native of the United States of America.

Update On Korean Immigrant Gunman

The Washington Post calls him a “South Korean native” who who immigrated to the United States as a child.

A 23-year-old senior English major from Centreville was the gunman who killed 32 people and then himself on the Virginia Tech campus yesterday, university and law enforcement officials said.

Cho Seung Hui was a South Korean native who immigrated to this country as a child, officials said. His lifeless body was found in Norris Hall, a classroom building, among those of several other slain students, Virginia state police superintendent Col. Steve Flaherty said. He had apparently taken his own life.

Gunman ID’d As Korean Immigrant

A Korean in the US on a student visa was the shooter. Korea has universal military training, which may account for the death toll.

Interesting, as of 10:17 this morning, none of the stories use the word “immigrant” to describe him.

Va. Tech: Gunman Student From S. Korea Associated Press, April 17, 2007

Police identified the classroom shooter as Cho Seung-Hui, 23, a senior from South Korea who was in the English department at Virginia Tech and lived in a different dorm on campus. Cho committed suicide after the attacks, and there was no indication Tuesday of any possible motive.

“He was a loner, and we’re having difficulty finding information about him,” school spokesman Larry Hincker said.

Immigrant Gunman At Virginia Tech?

Inquiring minds want to know, but police can’t say. It’s very rare that they do say. See for example, That San Jose Abductor Was A Guess What. (Hint: The Media Won’t Tell You.)

PC Commissar Professor Eric Muller, [Send him mail]in a moment of holier-than-thou-ness suggests that Michelle Malkin is “warped” for pointing out that Virginia Tech was a gun-free zone with a ban on the means of self-defense.

I would suggest that Muller’s obsession with Malkin is extremely warped.

WorldNetDaily reports that the shooter, said by witnesses to be Asian, may be an immigrant. Perhaps we’ll know tomorrow. In any event, the MSM storyline is usually this–when an immigrant goes on a killing spree with a gun, blame the gun.

WorldNetDaily: Shanghai student eyed in university shooting
Authorities investigating the killing of 32 people at Virginia Tech today, the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history, are targeting a Chinese man who arrived in the U.S. last year on a student visa, a source told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Investigators have not linked the 24-year-old to any terrorist group, the paper said.

The man, with a visa issued in Shanghai, arrived Aug. 7 in San Francisco on United Airlines. Three reported bomb threats on the campus last week might have been attempts by him to test the campus’ security response, the source told the Sun-Times.

UPDATE: If you don’t know, the Shanghai student rumor later proved to be false–it was a different Asian immigrant.
