U.S. Colleges Rearrange Titanic Deck Chairs

With respect to colleges revamping their curriculum in an attempt to attract more students into computer science.

Greg Bluestein writes at Associated Press :

At risk, professors say, is nothing less than U.S. technology supremacy. As interest in computer science drops in the U.S., India and China are emerging as engineering hubs with cheap labor and a skilled work force.

Schools across the country are taking steps to broaden the appeal of the major.

…..

The computing industry has a reason to be concerned about the future.

The number of new computer science majors has steadily declined since 2000, falling from close to 16,000 students to only 7,798 in fall 2006, according to the Computing Research Association.

And the downward trend isn’t expected to reverse soon. The association says about 1 percent of incoming freshmen have indicated computer science as a probable major, a 70 percent drop from the rate in 2000.

I would suggest there are other forces at play. The jobs losses caused by the dotcom crash was simply small compared to displacement of Americans due to corporate sponsored immigration policies.

For many technically-inclined Americans, working in a skilled trade is today a more attractive option than corporate or governmental service.

Another major factor is non-economic. H-1b expansion has made corporate and government service quite unattractive-particularly in some organizations with foreign-dominated management that are biased towards a specific ethnic or religious group.

There is considerable value in having technical workers who are actually enthusiastic about a country and its institutions. The brain-dead policies of Bush, Kennedy, and McCain have done just the opposite. They have deeply alienated some of the most skilled workers in the US - a mistake that could take years to recover from.

This is such an error of judgment that it could be literally fatal for the US - particularly if the US finds itself engaged in a technological war.

Whorehouse Diversity Invades Nashville

Poor Juan. Life can be tough in El Norte when you are fraudulently documented. All a Mexican can do work and drink. And drink. And drink.

And visit the local culturally appropriate whorehouse for a little lovin’, courtesy of professionals who know how to talk nasty in Spanish. Aye, caramba!

Yes! It’s a job Americans won’t do! We’ve found one.

Unfortunately for citizens, the Mexicans have slyly located their sex parlors in residential neighborhoods, so American children are exposed to more diversity than their parents might like.

And law enforcement officers tasked with combating the illicit, highly organized businesses say Hispanic brothels are a growing problem in the Nashville area, where single, male immigrant laborers are creating a burgeoning demand for the services of female immigrant prostitutes. [...]

Unlike brothels operated from massage parlors or adult entertainment businesses, many Hispanic brothels are set up in regular homes or apartments, right in the middle of Nashville neighborhoods. That can pose a problem for adults and children who live in those areas and are exposed the business of prostitution, authorities said.

Yep, it’s another item for the Unintended Consequences file. Open borders lead to Mexican whorehouses in Nashville suburbs.

El Presidente Bush strikes again!

Mexican Teachers Invading Utah Schools - With Govt., MSM Support

Thanks to an alert VDARE.COM reader in Utah for this: Representatives from Granite, Davis, Tooele and Salt Lake school districts traveled to Mexico City last week to meet with 50 Mexicans who want teaching jobs in Utah, inspired by an agreement Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. forged during his 2005 visit to Mexico.

But parents and teachers in Utah, don’t worry! They have nothing but the best in mind for your students — if the students are Mexican.

The arrangement is also intended to develop a better understanding of both countries’ educational systems, history and culture while helping Spanish-speaking students in Utah do better in school… “We are very happy. We’ve had some great success,” [Granite educrat Mike] Fraser said. “What is best about this is they’ve got proven teaching experience and, more than anything, they’re fluent in Spanish.”

Mexican teachers to buttress local schools:They will help Spanish speakers do better in school; no Utahn is being deprived of a job, by Roxana Orellana, Salt Lake Tribune 06/11/2007

But, judging by the lengthy comments posted on the Salt Lake Tribune’s page, very few of their readers are fooled. Let’s hope they vote that way.

“Bringing Them Out Of The Shadows”

As I’ve pointed out before, the priority of new immigration legislation should be to stop the situation from getting worse. But the media and the Kennedy-Bush Axis of Amnesty assumes the most crucial issue is“doing something” about the illegal immigrants currently here. Specifically, we must “bring them out of the shadows,” as the cliche goes.

Why?

Can anybody document what bringing 2.7 million illegal immigrants out of the shadows into legality accomplished in 1986?

These amnestied illegals were preponderantly living in California, so we can look at California’s experience. Did amnesty:

  • Help California’s standard of living? Well, from the standpoint of becoming a homeowner, California’s combination of high cost of living and low median income now offers the second worst standard of living of any state in America, better than only isolated Hawaii.
  • Improve California’s schools? California, home to Silicon Valley, now battles states like Arkansas and South Carolina for the runner-up position at the bottom of the NAEP scores.
  • Persuade the amnestied illegals’ kids to stop spraypainting their tags all over every vertical surface in LA? Ever since Villaraigosa got elected mayor in 2005, the city has been swamped by gang graffiti.
  • Stop more illegal aliens from coming to California? Yeah, right …

So, why does Axis keep trying to yank our chains about the benefits of amnesty when it failed so spectacularly in the biggest state in the country?

Is Ron Paul the Great Hope for the GOP?

Ron Paul’s web site has recently reported a substantial surge in donations. Some third party reports suggest that Paul is approaching $5 Million in cash on hand.

Paul is also leading by a key measure of internet activity.

Paul’s odds of actually getting the GOP nomination are between 1-3% according to the market at Intrade.Com.

Still, when every other GOP candidate with better odds of getting the nomination is supporting de facto expansion of immigration, this puts Paul in a unique position to leverage the frustration with immigration expansion.

I have my reservations about Paul. Many libertarians like Paul seem to assume their policies will not result in increased concentration of wealth-and they often don’t seem to have a plan to handle the situation if that isn’t he case. I suspect if Paul were to listen carefully to fellow libertarian Charles Murray, he’d have much better chance of winning in a national election.
