HAZLETON, Pa. (AP) - Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta easily won re-election Tuesday to a third term, and in his victory party he talked about fighting drugs and violence in the city.

He also talked about the issue of illegal immigrants.

He said, “We’ve seen what illegal immigration has done to our small town quality of life and we have said, ‘No! We will not let this happen.”‘ He said, “We will fight!”

Barletta, a Republican, gained national prominence by targeting illegal immigrants living in his Luzerne County city.

Yesterday, he defeated Libertarian candidate John Medashefski, a coffee shop owner who had argued that the city should drop its costly effort to push through a law targeting illegal immigrants.

Unofficial returns showed Barletta winning 90 percent of the vote to Medashefski’s 10 percent.

Hazleton’s effort is only costly because the ACLU initiated an expensive lawsuit. (You can donate to help the town win its appeal here.)The 90 percent vote isn’t that significant–I suspect an opponent like Libertarian candidate John Medashefski was practically the same as Barletta running unopposed. But it’s good to hear. Congratulations to Mayor Barletta!

Dozens of Illegals Arrested in Major Airport

How screwed up is this? Six-plus years after 9/11 and the government still can’t keep illegal aliens from working in sensitive areas.

Nearly two dozen illegal immigrants were arrested Wednesday, accused of using fake security badges to work in critical areas of O’Hare International Airport, including the tarmac, authorities said.

The 23 illegal workers were employed by Ideal Staffing Solutions Inc., whose corporate secretary and office manager also were arrested after an eight-month investigation that involved federal, state and Chicago authorities.

It doesn’t matter that a lot of these illegals are probably Mexicans. They are likely targets for blackmail, where a Qaeda guy says put this package on the airplane or I’ll tell the authorities about your immigration status.

Foreigners have already shown they are willing to sacrifice American lives to stay in this country; for examples, see hit-run driver Yesenia Angulo-Gastelum, who left Arizonan Michael Boulden to die, and cold-blooded murderer Diego Pillco, who strangled and hanged film director Adrienne Shelly because he feared being deported.

Huckabee’s Vice Presidential Campaign–and Immigration

Dick Morris is writing on NewsMax as if Huckabee were a serious presidential candidate. That is actually rather silly. If you look at the odds on Intrade, Huckabee, the odds of a Huckabee presidential Nomination have never been above 10%–and are now only around 5%–and a recent and substantial surge. However, the odds of a Huckabee Vice-Presidential nomination are between 27% and 32%-which means Huckabee leads the pack of GOP Vice Presidential hopefuls.

Basically the open border radicals who run the Republican party need to assure at all costs they have both the Vice Presidential and Presidential positions. If Huckabee can wound Romney in Iowa and/or New Hampshire, that makes Huckabee quite valuable to Giuliani who is focusing on a victory in Florida.

Now, I think Huckabee is potentially a serious candidate in Iowa. During the Ames straw poll, Huckabee did well by working evangelical churches-and Brownback worked the Catholic churches. Both focused on banning abortion as a central issue. That is an issue that can work well in a caucus state, where the key is getting activists to show up to a meeting where they need to participate to a degree.

Now, I see this all a con in the big scheme of things. In a day of RU-486, even a national ban on abortions would still mean there would be a lot of abortions in the USA. There are plenty of examples of countries where abortion is illegal that still have high rates of abortion.

One major factor in the prevalence of abortion is the concentration of wealth-and the lack of availability of jobs to young people that might reasonably be expected to support a family. For many less wealthy Americans, immigration is a major factor in lowering their wages-and in promoting increases of immigration, politicians like Huckabee and Romney are hypocritically working to lower family wages while claiming that they promoting family values by banning abortion.

Mitt Romney: “I Like H-1B Visas.”

[Presidential candidate Mitt Romney said "I like H-1B visas." He likes H-1B so much he said he wants an unlimited number of them to flood the U.S. labor market. Does that sound so outrageous that you just can't believe Romney would said say such things? It gets worse, you can listen to it yourself by going to the Techcrunch page. They have a podcast as well as a streaming audio file so you can listen to Romney in person.[ Interview With Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney On Technology Issues, November 1, 2007]

Keep in mind that Romney not only wants to flood the U.S. with more H-1Bs, he wants more green cards too. Last month he said this to a group of foreign tech students:

“I’d rather staple a green card to your diploma and say that if you can get a Ph.D. from one of our great institutions, we’d love you to stay here.” I did a Google search to try to find some articles about this interview in the United States media. I couldn’t find a single one, but it’s all over the Indian press. Corporate Media Electoral Bias–and Immigration

We at VDARE are an example of “new media.” Now the bulk of people out there are still dependent on corporate infomercials with pretenses of journalism for what information they have. In that polluted information climate, it is rather remarkable that issues like immigration continue to be raised–and that this election, a candidate strongly opposed by Corporate Media may have a realistic and growing chance at the nomination of a major political party.

This week, Ron Paul raised $4.2 Million during a Guy Fawkes fund raising event. There are some other major fundraising events in the works-and the political markets are showing Paul as the candidate most likely after Romney and Giuliani to get the GOP nomination.

Now, I expect that George Bush doesn’t like the prospect of an anti-war Libertarian taking over his party. Could this happen? Well, there are noises of some other major Ron Paul fund raising events prior to New Hampshire and Iowa.

Now, the “conventional wisdom ” is that Paul can’t win because he doesn’t do well in polls. The problem with those polls is that they don’t ask what people might think of candidates if they knew what their stands actually were. The point of the fundamental corruption and intellectual dishonesty of corporate media in that respect is described by Jim Bowery in this article,The Real Reason Ron Paul Supporters Hate the Old Media So Much.

One fun link in that article points to a candidate evaluation program that suggests which candidates most closely match a specific voter (and immigration plays a prominent role in that program’s selection). As Bowery points out, national media could conduct scientific polls that would suggest what candidates might do well if they obtained funding–and would help explain what the public really wants.

Sadly, in the current climate, any candidate with good corporate media support is most likely scum-and increasingly the public is developing a sense of that. I truly doubt that Paul can get the GOP nomination.
However, I think that just Paul’s presence in the major GOP debates will be utterly humiliating to Bush. If Paul does well, that could force Giuliani and Romney to join forces to get the nomination. If a Giuliani/Romney ticket does poorly in 2008, Paul may well be in a major position of authority in 2008. I suspect Paul will be too old to run again in 2012-but some major Republican will get the nomination, and I expect they’d have views closer to Paul than Bush, Giuliani or Romney if both of them are utterly discredited.

Paul has a long way to go to really understand the immigration issue. I’m honestly afraid of how his policies might accelerate concentration of wealth. Still, of the candidates with any realistic chance of getting the nomination, Paul has the most realistic stand on immigration-is rather offensive to the mainstream Republican leadership that has promoted mass immigration.
