Black vs Hispanic Riot in School

100 Students Involved In Black-on-Hispanic Brawls At NY School… is one of the headlines on the Drudge Report right now, right between Dead goldfish offered the vote in Illinois… and  76-Year-Old NYC Pickpocketer Arrested For 73rd Time!

But that’s Drudge’s headline–the actual WCBSTV headline is  Hempstead High On Guard Following 2 Days Of Brawls Principal: 100 of School’s 1,600 Students Involved; Dozens Suspended And Undercover Cops Take Over Building , Oct 21, 2008.

Hempstead High is in the Long  Island village of Hempstead. Hempstead is one of the first places on Long Island to see Mara Salvatrucha activity. At the moment, Wikipedia says of Hempstead (nicknames The Hub, The ‘Stead, Blackville) that

Hempstead is one of the few Black and Latino majority neighborhoods on Long Island (along with Roosevelt, Uniondale, Freeport and Wyandanch). It is also home to a large Salvadoran population.

Uh-oh.

But besides the “Uh-oh” there’s the media point–the “black vs. Hispanic“  thing belongs in the headline, where Drudge, with his ever reliable tabloid instincts, put it.  And the media needs to know that, because there’ll be more of these riots.

More On Afghan Slavery In The Pacific Northwest

Linda Thom forwards another couple of stories about the Afghan Slavery case, one of which actually mentions the immigration status of the accused in the first paragraph.

Prosecutors: Afghan girl enslaved in Wash. By GENE JOHNSON, AP , October 16, 2008
SEATTLE — Five Seattle-area immigrants from Afghanistan enslaved a teenage girl they brought to the U.S., with some forcing her to do chores and one - her 37-year-old husband - beating and sexually assaulting her, according to a federal indictment unsealed this week.[More]

Linda writes

I sent the Seattle PI and Seattle Times articles on the Afghans. They are in the country legally and they don’t speak English. I suppose they are refugees but who knows?

The girl is illegal as she entered under a visa illegally but good news, she is eligible to stay in the US as she is a victim of human trafficking.

Then she can apply to reunite her family. . . . and the beat goes on.

I think the poor girl doesn’t have any actual family, which is how she wound up in this fix. Query–do you think that the accused, if found guilty, will be deported to Afghanistan? I doubt it–an immigration court will think it’s too dangerous. The only way an illegal immigrant could get sent to Afghanistan by the American government is if he enlisted in the US Army.

OK, The Victim’s From Afghanistan. What About The Accused?

The headline on Brenda’s item below isAfghan Throws Wife And Daughter Out Of Window In St. Louis.” That’s our headline, the MSM headline just said “Man.This Associated Press headline says that “King County residents” (near Seattle) are charged with enslaving a young Muslim woman. You might think this was revival of American slavery, as practiced before the Civil War. But considering that the one named accused is called Mohammad, I suspect that it’s another case of foreigners importing slavery, as practised overseas, to America.

SEATTLE — A grand jury indictment in Seattle accuses five south King County residents of enslaving a 16-year-old girl from Afghanistan.

The indictment says she was forced to marry a man, Mohammad Atahee, when she was 13 in Afghanistan. Then she was brought to the United States and beaten, raped and forced to do housework and child care at homes in Federal Way and Auburn.

The five appeared in federal court Wednesday on charges of conspiring to engage in forced labor. Three people, including the 37-year-old Atahee who is also accused of beating and sexually assaulting the girl, are detained pending further hearings. Atahee pleaded not guilty. Two other people were released under travel restrictions.

Trial is set for Dec. 23 in Seattle.

More details here. The US Attorney’s press release, with more Muslim names as the accused, can be read here.

HIV, African Immigration, And The Press

In this headline from Canada, the word Crown means “Prosecutor”--in Canada, miscreants are prosecuted in the name of the Queen.

A Ugandan immigrant is accused of infecting a number of women in Canada, and of course the fact that he’s from Africa is only mentioned near the bottom of the story, and then only because the strain of HIV that he suffers from and allegedly transmitted is an African strain.

Crown alleges HIV-positive man knowingly had unprotected sex with women

HAMILTON - Crown lawyers allege women could not have consented to having sex with an HIV-positive Hamilton man because he did not inform them of his health status.

Johnson Aziga is charged with aggravated sexual assault for allegedly having unprotected sex with 11 women. In two of the cases, the charges were elevated to first-degree murder after the complainants died.

The Crown also maintains the strain of the virus that causes AIDS that the women and Aziga were infected with is a rare strain known to be typical of Africa.

Aziga is from Uganda.

None of the allegations has been proven in court.

An earlier article about the same accused also doesn’t mention, in the headline, that the accused is a Ugandan immigrant. It quotes an AIDS activist as objecting to the prosecution:

“Using the criminal law in this kind of way is not particularly helpful,” said Richard Elliott, deputy director of the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network.

“It risks becoming the dominant impression out there of people living with HIV as potential criminals, which is not an accurate or fair representation.”

Actually, it is–anyone with a terminal, infectious disease has a potential to kill people by accident, and they also have the potential to commit a serious crime, if they deceive people about their disease. There are laws against this in both the US and Canada, but for political reasons, they’re very little used.
